Rockhounding Adventures Near Vancouver: Fluorite, Pyrite & Fossils

Updated: May 29

Exploring the Earth: Local Rockhounding Spots

At Coastal Crystals, we’re all about celebrating the wonder of the natural world- and few things bring you closer to that than rockhounding. There’s something so satisfying about getting your hands dirty and discovering a crystal, fossil, or mineral with your own two hands. If you’re based near Vancouver and looking for accessible, exciting places to explore, here are three of our favorite rockhounding adventures- each one doable in a day trip and full of treasures waiting to be uncovered.

🟣 Vernon, BC – Fluorite in an Old Mining Pit

Nestled up a service road outside Vernon, BC, lies a rockhounding dream: an abandoned mining pit where vibrant fluorite veins run right through the earth. With a hammer and chisel, you can chip away at the exposed rock and uncover pieces in shades of purple, green, and blue. Most pieces are about the size of a dime, but we’ve pulled out a few golf ball–sized beauties too. Surface picking is also productive, since the area is popular and constantly shifting. We collected nearly a full bucket in just 90 minutes! It’s one of the most consistent and rewarding spots we’ve been to- feel free to email us for coordinates if you want to go!

✨ Whistler, BC – Pyrite Cubes Right Off the Road

Yes, nature really does grow perfect cubes- if you know where to look! In Whistler, you can find stunning iron pyrite cubes embedded in the rock face along the side of the road. The surrounding soil is soft and crumbly, which makes it easy to gently tap the cubes free. Most are about the size of a pea, and their natural shine and shape are absolutely mesmerizing. This spot is a favorite for beginners and seasoned rockhounds alike. Interested? Reach out and we’re happy to share coordinates!

🦪 Fossil Creek, WA – Clam Shell Fossils at the Base of Mount Baker

Just across the border in Washington, there's a creek ironically named Fossil Creek, located near the base of Mount Baker- and yes, it lives up to its name! Here, you’ll find rocks absolutely loaded with ancient clam shells. Look closely for fingernail-like lines and curved impressions on the rock’s surface- these are signs that fossils are inside. Tap the rock open and you’ll often uncover beautifully preserved shells inside. It’s a peaceful, scenic spot and a fun place to hunt for genuine prehistoric finds. Want to check it out? Message us and we’ll gladly provide the coordinates.

Rock On & Stay Curious

Rockhounding is more than just collecting- it’s about curiosity, connection, and the thrill of discovery. Each site we’ve visited around BC and nearby Washington has been rich with hidden gems (literally!). Whether you’re searching for colorful fluorite, shiny pyrite cubes, or ancient fossils, these day-trip destinations are perfect for anyone looking to explore the natural beauty and geology of our region.

We sometimes have a few of our rockhounding finds available for purchase in the store, so be sure to stop by Coastal Crystals to see what’s new! And if you want to follow along on our adventures (this was just a handful of the spots we’ve visited), follow us on Instagram for behind-the-scenes looks at future trips, finds, and crystal-hunting tips.

Happy hounding, and we’ll see you in the shop!
